Poppy eased the shower a little hotter. The water ran over her nakedness. She covered her palms with the luxurious shower foam and fanned her hands over her body. Down her arms. Across her belly. Up and around her breasts. But it wasn’t her hands she imagined gliding over her skin.

She turned her back to the spray, hoping to quell her building desire. It was stupid to feed this ludicrous delusion that she and Nic could have something together. The man was flying back to California tomorrow after returning her to Manchester.

But today . . . Ah, today . . . Today had been the most wonderful and perplexing day she could remember. She squeezed shampoo onto her hands and lathered up.

So what if she indulged in a little fantasy? Nic had kissed her in the woods. So what if it had just been the reaction to a crisis? He’d kissed her. Held her.

She ducked her head under the water, and soap bubbles caressed their way down her skin. She envisaged Nic’s hands following the same path. A wanton ache, wickedly sensual and demanding, settled deep in her core.

Something creaked outside the bathroom. Her chest tightened. What was she doing? How long had she been in here? She held her face up to the water and washed away her fantasies. She’d enjoy the night for what it was. Sharing a suite on a pleasant spring evening in Paris with her hot boss, who would leave in the morning.

Stepping from the shower, she pulled on a fluffy hotel robe. It was a shame she had to wear the clothes she’d had on all day. At least she’d brought her emergency make-up bag.

After reapplying eye shadow, mascara and some lipstick, she stepped into her vast bedroom. An enormous gold box tied with a shiny navy ribbon lay on the bed. Her pulse leapt. What on earth . . .

Running to the box, she unravelled the satin ribbon and pulled off the lid. Fine rose-coloured tissue concealed its contents. She folded back the paper carefully, almost frightened by what she’d find. A black dress lay perfectly nestled in the tissue. She touched the fabric. Her fingertips tingled. Silk.

She drew the gorgeous garment from the box and held it aloft.

Simple, classic, stunning. She hugged it to her chest and closed her eyes. She’d never owned anything so beautiful.

There was another smaller box. She whipped off the lid and discovered a black camisole and matching knickers wrapped in the same fine tissue. Sensual adrenaline shot through her. She grazed her teeth across her bottom lip. How had these been chosen? Had Nic picked these out himself?

Dropping the robe, she slipped into her new clothes. Twirling in front of the mirror, she felt every bit like Cinderella plucked from obscurity. All so perfect.

She couldn’t bear to ruin the outfit with her sensible day shoes so she walked in bare feet.

Her body zinged with nerves. It wasn’t every day she stayed in a five-star Parisian hotel and had a gorgeous man buy her fine French clothes.
